New Emirates ID Renewal Rule for UAE Citizens

UAE citizens using the new Emirates ID renewal rule for faster and easier application.

The UAE has introduced a new Emirates ID renewal rule that makes the process easier and faster for Emirati citizens. As a result, renewing an Emirates ID now requires less paperwork and fewer steps, saving both time and effort.

What’s New in the New Emirates ID Renewal Rule?

The Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs and Ports Security (ICP) confirmed that citizens no longer need to provide unnecessary details during renewal. Instead, the procedure now involves just one simple step.

Applicants only need to:

  • Submit the application
  • Pay the fee

Previously, citizens had to enter their address, provide data from the national database, and attach an Emirates ID template. However, the ICP removed all these requirements to make the process quicker.

Emirates ID Validity Under the New Renewal Rule

Under the new rule, the validity period depends on the applicant’s age:

  • 21 years and under → Valid for 5 years
  • 21 years and above → Valid for 10 years

Therefore, younger citizens will renew their IDs more often, while adults will benefit from longer validity.

Who Benefits from This Rule?

This update applies only to UAE citizens. While every resident in the UAE must hold an Emirates ID, expatriates will continue to follow the current renewal process.

Why This Change Matters

The new Emirates ID renewal rule is part of the UAE’s Zero Government Bureaucracy Programme, which aims to reduce red tape and improve government efficiency. In addition, the ICP recently applied a similar update to UAE passport renewals, reflecting the country’s move toward more digital and paperless services.

Can Expats Apply for UAE Citizenship?

Foreign residents do not benefit from this rule. However, the UAE allows certain categories, including investors, doctors, scientists, inventors, intellectuals, and creative talents, to apply for citizenship. Moreover, wives of Emirati citizens and children of UAE citizens may also qualify for passports.
